Hutchins, Charles Kenneth, Jr., (Ken) Age 89, of Durham, NH; passed away Peacefully on August 4, 2020 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, following a fall. Ken was born in Portland, ME on December 26, 1930; the son of Charles Kenneth Hutchins, Sr. and Helen Marie (Baker) Hutchins. He graduated from Kennebunk High School in 1948, attended Northeastern University and graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a B. S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1953. He was a member Tau Beta Pi. Ken worked for NACA, a precursor to NASA; Simplex Wire and Cable; Taco, Inc.; and finally, Fram Corp. in East Providence, RI for more than 25 years. At his retirement in 1991, he held several patents. He retired to his longtime summer home in Acton, ME and lived there until moving back to Durham in 2017. Ken leaves behind his wife of almost 67 years, Penelope (Pantos) Hutchins; five daughters, June Burgess of Acushnet, MA; Donna Morton and her husband Donald of Boxford, MA; Lynn Bostrom and her husband Peter of Acton, ME; Sharon Cronin of Dover, NH; and Edna Hutchins of West Warwick, RI. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Micheala Bostrom Huff and her husband David of Garner, NC; Jonathan Morton of Portland, OR; Ashley Morton and her husband, Zach Comtois of New York, NY; Shannon Bostrom of Mesa, CO; Alexander Cronin of Baltimore, MD; and Caitlin Cronin and her fiancé, Matthew Anderson of Santa Fe, NM; and two great granddaughters, Bayleigh Huff and Brooke Huff. His third great grandchild is due in December. He is also survived by four nephews, their spouses and numerous great nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, two sisters and their spouses. Ken was an avid hiker, a lifetime member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, who climbed the hundred highest mountains in New England. He had a Class 3 River Rating and taught others to white water canoe, frequently paddling with family members. He also had a passion for radio control airplanes, once flying every month in a year after putting skis on his favorite plane. He had so many hobbies, interests, and talents that they are too numerous to mention but included sailing, water skiing, woodworking, oil painting, sewing, poetry, photography, figure skating, and travel. He received third place ribbon for a painting at the Fryeburg Fair, had a photo published in the Portland Press Herald, and traveled to all fifty states. Ken is remembered as a patient instructor, a loving father, and grandfather, and a devoted husband. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Tributes may be made in his honor to the Alzheimer’s Association. To sign our online guestbook, please go to
