Obituary for Carroll E Holmes

SOUTH BERWICK- Carroll Edward Holmes, 79, of South Berwick passed away Sunday, September, 27, 2020, at Wentworth Douglass Hospital following a period of failing health after suffering a stroke seven years ago.
Born in Caribou, Maine, on December 7, 1940, he was the son of Edward and Marjorie (Rossignol) Holmes.
He is survived by his wife and best friend of 56 years, Gloria of South Berwick; daughter Jennifer and her husband, Jay Redimarker, of South Berwick; and daughter Diana Holmes of South Berwick; four grandchildren, Julia, Grace, Evan, and Liam Connors. Carroll is also survived by his brother Wilmont Holmes and his wife Nora, of Nottingham, NH; sister Shirley Whitney of South Berwick; sister Brenda and her husband, Robert Swanson, of Somersworth; and sister Judy and her husband, Randy Brom, of Fort Atkinson, WI, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Marjorie Holmes, and his sister, Phoebe Pearl Stone.
Carroll was highly adept at working with heavy equipment and started his excavation business, C.E. Holmes Construction, in 1974. He also subcontracted for the Town of South Berwick, trucking and plowing snow for more than 25 years. He operated his business until his first stroke in 2013. Having grown up in The County he was an incredibly hard worker. Carroll enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren as they were the light of his life. He will be greatly missed.

A graveside service will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in South Berwick on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 11am.
