Obituary for Hubert L Sloat Jr.

Hubert L. (Budd) Sloat, Jr.

Dover, New Hampshire: Hubert L. (Budd) Sloat, Jr., 94, of 18 Chapel Street, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at Riverside Rest Home with his family by his side. He was born on April 2, 1927, in Montclair, New Jersey; the son of Hubert L. Sr. and Theodora Scrivener Sloat.

After graduation and several attempts to enlist in the United States Army, Budd was accepted and eventually became a Sergeant in the Transportation Corps. He was stationed in Berlin, Germany from 1951 to 1954. After the Army, he lived in California with his wife and son. During Budd’s childhood, he fell in love Damariscotta, Maine while summering there with his family. As time went on and family dynamics changed, he returned to his beloved Maine in 1983, settling in Washington. He realized that is where he was meant to be. He worked different small jobs but his main work was cutting wood. There was not a tree, standing or fallen, that Budd was not ready to cut, chop and stack. Budd was a dedicated soldier, an avid reader, romantic poet, good friend to all he met and an accomplished woodsman who collected volumes of books and a room full of typewriters. He was an integral part of making the new library in Washington a reality and volunteered in the Gibbs Library after it opened. His love of books was unmatched.

Budd moved to Dover, New Hampshire to be closer to family but yearned to get back to Maine. He was always willing to listen and compare thoughts and ideas to make a better world for everyone. His mantra was “Read, Think, Talk and Decide.”

Budd is survived by his son Andrew Sloat, of Fraizer Park, California, Andrew’s wife Kim, their six children and eight grandchildren and too many nieces, nephews, great- nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews to count, but he was loved by all. Budd had many friends that will miss him dearly.

He was pre-deceased by his parents, his brother Peter Sloat, and sisters Audrey Stehlin and Linda Ward.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name, Budd Sloat, to the Gibbs Library, 40 Old Union Road, Washington, ME 04574.

A Celebration of Budd’s life will be held from 2-4:00 pm on Saturday March 26, 2022. Please email Stephanie at s.eno@comcast.net for details.

A Military Graveside service will be held at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Montclair, New Jersey at 1 pm on Friday, April 1, 2022.
