Obituary for Irene C. Tierney (Smith)

Irene C. (Smith) Tierney, 83, a longtime resident of Hudson, MA, peacefully passed into God’s eternal arms on Sunday, January 24 surrounded by her loving family at her Hudson home of 58 years. Irene was born in Detroit, MI on July 9, 1937; the daughter of the late Herbert G. and Mary (Stone) Smith. Irene and her late sisters, Jean McLean and Norma Malia, were raised in Cape Elizabeth and South Portland, ME. Irene later moved to Hudson, MA where she raised her beautiful family.

Irene attended local Maine schools and was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Portland, ME. Before moving to MA, she was employed in the office of the Maine Medical Center. Irene spent many years raising her family on Old Bolton Road in Hudson. Once her children were older, she secured a position as Accounts Payable Supervisor at Digital Equipment Corporation for 18 years. She also worked at EMC in Hopkinton, MA within one of the Engineering teams until she retired. After retiring she served as a Nanny to many different families in Sudbury and other surrounding towns. She was also a parishioner of Saint Michael’s Church in Hudson for many years.

Irene leaves her loving children, Vicky T. Tierney and her partner Lynne Grey of Barrington, NH, John J. Tierney and his wife Sherrie of Hudson and Jerold W. Tierney also of Hudson. She leaves her adoring grandchildren, Alysha Fairweather and her husband Matt of Lancaster, MA and John J. Tierney III of Brentwood, NH; nieces and nephews, along with many other family members and cherished friends. She is predeceased by John W. Tierney, the father of her children.

Irene had a zest and passion for life, making numerous friends and leaving a lasting impression wherever she went. Her bright smile, sense of humor, and sassy fun-loving personality were some of her qualities many enjoyed and admired. Over the years, she enjoyed socializing with friends, dancing, singing karaoke (she did have a great voice), exploring new places and making new acquaintances; she was always up for an adventure and fun time. Irene was known for lending a caring and sympathetic ear, imparting advice and support and most of all encouraging each person to believe in themselves. But above all, Irene’s love of family, friends and life is the legacy she leaves with everyone she met on her life’s journey.
