Obituary for John Patrick Newman Sr.

Rev. John Newman ascended into heaven surrounded by his family. He was born in Newfoundland, Canada and moved to Northwood, N.H. in 1957. He was the pastor and founder of Higher Ground Ministries in Barnstead where he served for 34 years. Known as “Piper John”, his bagpipes were heard, not only at dusk every night on the pond, but also throughout many states and even abroad. He performed at Pearl Harbor, the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, and in Tokyo, Japan as well as at every Opening Day of fishing. He brought his rich Irish heritage with him to N.H. and shared his passion for music and Newfie jigs with his family. A gifted musician, he also played several instruments including the accordion and guitar, and wrote countless songs. Other accomplishments include the publication of his book titled “Oath to My Father” and the production of two CD’s.
John served in the U.S. Army National Guard in the 3rd/197th Battalion which was activated to Vietnam in 1968. He was a decorated veteran receiving the Bronze Star with V-Device as well as several other metals. He was a member of the Northwood VFW and American Legion. In addition, he earned a Master’s Degree in Theology.
John is survived by his wife and “sweetheart” Fran of 55 years. They loved to dance to the Platters, travel, and hunt and fish together.
Their children are Arlene Van Asperen, Gayle Torla, Harmony Fowler, and John Newman Jr. Their grandchildren are Jocelyn, Leanna, Liam, Alexis, Isabella, Myles, and Riley. He is also survived by his sibling Doreen Schreiber of F.L. and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was so proud of his family and encouraged them daily. He will always be remembered for his booming laughter and unwavering love for the Lord.
Calling hours are at Purdy Funeral Home in Lee, N.H. on Thursday, December 10th from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be a Celebration of Life at Higher Ground Ministries in Barnstead in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Higher Ground Ministries, c/o Fran Newman, P.O. Box 123, West Nottingham, N.H. 03291.
