Obituary for King Pfeiffer
Captain King Pfeiffer died of COVID in Dover, NH on Jan. 4, 2021.
He was born in Evanston, Illinois and spent his early years in Peoria, Illinois. Upon graduating from Phillips Andover Academy he enlisted in the US Navy and was called to duty in the spring of 1945.
In 1946 he received a Fleet appointment to the USNA where he graduated in 1950. After graduation from the USNA he was assigned to the USS Lloyd Thomas (a surface ship) for two years.
Following he entered the SUBMARINE FORCE where he served on the GRENADIR.
In 1953 he married Patricia Taylor of N. Y. City. He continued sea and shore duty in the East Coast as well as two postings in Europe.
In 1961 he was assigned as the first U.S. exchange instructor to the Federal German Naval Academy in Flensburg, Germany. He was also engaged in negotiations for SALT ARMS Control agreement which earned him the Legion of Merit Awards.
In 1978 he retired from the Navy. He received his PHD from Notre Dame and subsequently taught there International Relations.
His wife died in 1984.
In late 1987 he married Karola Luft.
Upon his move to Durham he taught US FOREIGN POLICY at UNH for 14 years, retiring in 2002.
He is survived by his wife (Karola), two children – Robert Pfeiffer and Caroline Rose and her husband Charles; one grandchild from his first marriage; two stepchildren and four grandchildren from his second marriage.
Predeceased by one grandson.
Interment will be at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in King's name to your favorite charity.
