Obituary for Paul J. Whippen

Paul J. Whippen, 85, of Dover, NH, passed away on March 31 after a year-long battle with cancer.

Paul was born on April 14,1936 to Josephine (White) and Albert Whippen in Chelsea, MA. After graduating from Chelsea High School, Paul entered the US Army in 1954 and served in the US occupation of Germany until 1956, for which he received the Army of Occupation Medal.

Paul married Lois (Griffin) Whippen in 1958 and had three daughters, Deborah Whippen, Diane (Whippen) Gibson, and Paula (Whippen) Concannon and husband Thomas. As former spouses, Paul and Lois remained good friends and proud parents of their daughters, loving grandparents of Elizabeth Gibson and Charles Gibson and wife Janne Harlem, and delighted great-grandparents of Louis Harlem Gibson. Paul’s humor and storytelling kept all close no matter where we were.

Paul worked hard and laughed much. He was a Hoods milk man, gasoline truck driver for Sun Oil and Noonan Oil, and groundskeeper at Danvers State Hospital and Province Lake Golf Course. His life path took him from city to country, where he became a keen observer of wildlife from birds to moose and all creatures in between. Paul enjoyed Irish music, growing flowers, keeping the bird feeders full, skiing and hiking, and the view of Belleau Lake behind his house. He was a good friend to many.

Paul was predeceased by his brother William (Bill) Whippen and sister Mary (Whippen) Carbone. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his sister Geraldine (Whippen) Harney and husband Donald, and numerous nieces and nephews. Special mention is made of the loving care received and laughs enjoyed this past year while living at The Residence at Silver Square, Dover, NH. Deb and Diane are forever grateful to Paula for the help and companionship she provided our Dad during his illness.

Visitation and services will be held at the Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Rd, Lee, NH, on Monday, April 11, (visitation 11am-1:00pm, services 1:00pm), followed by a reception. A private burial is planned at a later date at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Wakefield Food Pantry (http://www.wakefieldnhfoodpantry.com/) or the charity of your choice.
