Obituary for Richard Francis "Rick" Coutu

Richard (Rick) Coutu of Eliot, ME and Spring Hill, FL passed away on March 9, 2022 at his home in Spring Hill after a long battle with cancer.

He was predeceased by his parents Dr. Marcel Coutu and Theresa Roy Coutu.

He is survived by his wife and friend of 20 years, Diane Coutu, his Son Tyler R. Coutu, wife Melissa and granddaughters Calliah and Jayla of Eliot and his daughter Tara L. Coutu. Brothers, Dr. Robert Coutu, wife Dr. Carol Coutu of Lexington, MA, Raymond Coutu, wife Mary Jane Coutu of Cape Coral, FL, Dr. Ronald Coutu, wife Patricia of Bedford, NH, sister Rita Coutu and husband Michael Smith of Nashua, NH. Stepsons Brian Goulet, Mark Goulet, wife Tasha Goulet and six step grandchildren all of Berwick, ME. Many nieces and nephews.

Richard attended Stevens High School in Claremont, NH, where he participated in many sports. One of his big accomplishments was running track & field, where he set the schools half mile record in Keene, NH at the state finals with a time of 2.02 seconds. He also participated in the New England Meet of Champions in Durham, NH coming in 11th.

He attended New Hampshire Vocational College and received an Associate Degree. After graduation, Richard began his 38-year career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, in Portsmouth, NH as an electrician helper. He quickly worked his way up to Production Service Manager. During his time there, he participated in various organizations. He shopped for toys and organized drivers for the Christmas Caravan which supplied toys to local communities throughout the seacoast. He was involved in the Federal Manager’s Association, where he held positions including Sargent at Arms, Treasurer, Chaplain, Vice President and President. As a member of the FMA, he attended many functions and made trips to Washington DC area to meet members of congress as well as senators from Maine and New Hampshire.

Richard really enjoyed participating in his children’s activities such as, parent monitor for field trips, various outings and class trips. He also enjoyed coaching whatever sports Tara and Tyler were involved in. One of his most enjoyable and memorable times coaching, was taking his son Tyler and the 9/10 year old All Star Team to the State Finals! It was an enjoyable time for all involved.

He enjoyed all the New England sports teams, attending hockey, football, basketball and baseball games, his favorite being Red Sox games at Fenway Park.

Richard and Diane owned a camp on Ossipee Lake in Freedom, NH for many years and he always enjoyed good times there, especially when family and friends came to spend time at the lake!

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 10:00am at (Parish of Assumption) St. Mary’s Church, Chestnut Street, Dover, NH 03820 with Father Agapit Jean, officiating.
