Obituary for Richard Brayton Leonard

Richard Brayton Leonard, 86, sadly passed away peacefully at his home in Berwick, ME on May 8, 2021 with his wife and family beside him. He was the loving husband to Joann Bennett Leonard for 69 years. Born July 7, 1934 in North Attleboro, MA, Richard was the son of Leo Edward Leonard and Helen Warren Rivernider and brother of John Warren Leonard (deceased).
Richard leaves behind his wife Joann, seven children, and many grandchildren/great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his large family.
He was the father to Michael & Holly Leonard of Pawleys Island, SC, Dennis Leonard of Seekonk, MA, Stephen & Nancy Leonard of Hudson, NY, Karen & Frank Osborne of Milford, MA, Susan Leonard of Otisfield, ME, Thomas Leonard of Seekonk, MA and Annette Leonard of Bellingham, MA.
He was the grandfather (Papa/Grampa) to 19 grandchildren and 21 ½ great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind 3 nephews, several cousins, and a sister-in-law in NH.
Richard and Joann started their family in Somersworth, NH where he worked at General Electric, was a volunteer fireman, and a member of the NH National Guard. After that, they moved to Bellingham, MA where he continued to be a volunteer fireman. They then moved on to Franklin, MA where they continued to grow their family and was a coach for little league baseball and Pre-teen football. Next, they moved to Walpole, MA where he worked as a Technical Support Rep. at Kidde-Fenwal, Inc. in Ashland, MA and was known by many as “Mr. Fantastic”. He retired from there in 2000 and they moved to their forever home in Berwick, ME.
Richard loved his home in Berwick and enjoyed working in his yard, watching the birds, and was an avid music lover of all genres. He was fascinated by genealogy and spent a lot of time searching for his roots. He also enjoyed golfing, trips to Nantucket, beaches, and spending time with his wife and family.
The family wishes to thank York Hospital Home Care and York Hospital Hospice for the wonderful care given to Richard and the family.
Burial services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be made in Richard’s name to York Hospital Hospice, any Animal Rescue League, American Heart Association, or a charity of your choosing. Thank you.
