Obituary

William Richard Caldwell, 83, of Dover, NH passed away peacefully at his home on July 23, 2020. Born September 1, 1936 in Weirton, WV to Thomas and Mary (Riblett) Caldwell, Bill was one of 12 children. He grew up a fan of sports and played basketball, baseball and football, but he fell in love with golf while serving as a caddy at the local country club during high school. Bill graduated from Weir High School and then served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 until 1963. His service brought him to Portsmouth, NH, where he served as a prison guard at the Portsmouth Naval Prison. He moved to Dover and married his wife of 44 years, Charlotte (Gasses) Caldwell, in 1976. Together they raised a daughter, Sonja Caldwell, now of Concord, NH. He raised four children from a previous marriage, Stephanie Chantre of Rochester, Julie Critchet of Newmarket, and Daniel Caldwell of Rochester. His son William Caldwell predeceased him. He worked as a rural letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in the towns of Stratham and Greenland for over 30 years. In his young adult years, Bill was active in coaching, refereeing and umpiring youth sports. Bill was a member of the Portsmouth Country Club for decades where he golfed religiously every Sunday morning. He enjoyed competing in numerous golf tournaments over the years, however, the highlight of his golf career came during a trip with his wife to Scotland, where he fulfilled a lifelong dream of playing the famed St. Andrews golf course. He loved to travel and was known for mapping out road trips using his atlas. He loved finding alternative routes or “short-cuts”, as he liked to call them, to avoid traffic and major cities. He had a knack for direction and knew his way up and down the east coast like the back of his hand. He took his children on camping trips across the country with their pop-up camper. He also took many trips to Disney World and in more recent years, he and Charlotte enjoyed trips to Myrtle Beach, SC, where they spent time with Bill’s brother Harry and his wife Betty. In his retirement years, Bill’s favorite activities included going out to breakfast with his neighbor and best friend, Ed Koza, attending UNH football games with Ed, watching and rooting for the New England Patriots, and of course, playing golf, however his family was his greatest joy. Other surviving family members include sisters Marie Johnson and her husband David (Cincinnati, OH); Dorothy Lahita (Follansbee, WV), Ruth Ann Jeffries (Weirton, WV); several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, Bill’s personal wish is that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The family would also like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to Wentworth Hospice and Dover Fire and Rescue for their care and support.
